Think of this scenario. There's an emergency at your house. You dial 911 and speak to the dispatcher. However, it seems like it's taking a long time for first responders to arrive. Meanwhile, the responders have arrived on your street but they're having problems finding your house. The house doesn't have any easily identifiable numbers on it and the mailbox is blocked by trees.

In an emergency, situation time is of the essence. Emergency response teams cannot find you if your house number isn't clearly displayed. A majority of house numbers aren't visible from the street, especially at night. Can be a big challenge if the address numbers are unreadable, blocked, enlist, or not even there makes it hard to find you in an emergency. Please be sure to make sure that your house numbers are visible and how to display them. Below shows you how to do so:

  • Where should house numbers be displayed?

The number should be posted so that it is visible from both directions of travel. Trees, bushes or other debris should block visibility from the road. Numbers should be placed near the front door within a radius of the porch light and above eye level.
Check your house and mailbox and make sure your numbers are:

    • 4 inches tall or larger, block numbers - not script or text
    • VISIBLE FROM THE STREET and with proper lighting
    • As close to your front door as possible
    • On a contrasting background
    • On BOTH sides of your mailbox or house (Specially if you live on a corner)
    • Unobstructed of trees or light fixtures

Below are some simple guidelines for the best location for your house number.
At your home, the number should be posted so that it is visible from both directions of travel. Trees, bushes or other items should not block visibility from the road.

Numbers should be placed near the front door within a radius of the porch light and above eye level. Because first responders generally look to the front door area of the home first, avoid placing numbers in other areas such as above garage doors.

An additional measure such as using a reflective sign and mounting it to a stake in your lawn near the curb, to your mailbox post, or directly to your house will ensure ambulance or law enforcement personnel will be able to identify your home quickly.

Do not use your mailbox as the only means of identification for your home. If your mailbox is not in front of your home or near your driveway, emergency responders may be unable to locate you. Remember to mark your mailbox on both sides. Numbers on the mailbox door may be great for your mail carrier, but difficult to see by hurried emergency personnel trying to locate you or a loved one.
